All said and done for another year, how about saying thank you just a little bit more often
So you have finally managed to get some time to think about your business and your role in the organisation. Or perhaps you are resenting the fact that you don’t have time to just slow down and take stock as you have been so busy. If it’s the latter let’s hope all that energy has been converted into something tangible along the way.
Then there is all that social pressure to match your life to the positive images and articles which you are bombarded with at work, in the press and trade publications relating to achieving your goals and reaping the rewards for you and your team.
We all know how it feels to be under pressure to do and achieve more as the pace of societal and political change plays out its hand to your business and you adapt to life’s twist and turns.
As we come to the end of the year, this is a natural time for most business owners to pause, reflect on the year that has gone by, and prepare for making 2017 the best year yet. So how about a simple exercise? Why not list 10 occasions in the last six months which made you punch the air with a sense of achievement. Take time to see if there was a pattern or common theme.
Then list 20 or more times when you have said thank you to someone for their contribution – perhaps for their support/ their kindness of for just being there. Is there a pattern or some common recurring feature which you could build upon? If there are people you work with or suppliers who have helped you in some way then follow up and let them know how much you appreciate their contribution. The power of just taking time to say thank you is often overlooked or overshadowed by the tone when it has been necessary to correct a situation.
Saying thank you is such a powerful thing to do and to be on the receiving end of. The type of thanks I am referring to here is the meaningful words of recognition to someone who can without any doubt sense the genuine tone of appreciative recognition for the contribution they have made to your business.
Hopefully you can still connect with what it is that makes you genuinely feel good about your business and the difference it makes to people. Reflect on why you decided to run your own business and your purpose. Take time to recount your successes and the difference you have made.
Genuine passion for your business can be as infectious as laughter and saying thank you helps to reinforce connections and the value people have contributed in fuelling your passions for being in business. Why are some companies more successful than others? Why are some individuals so inspiring and have some companies achieved what they have achieved.

Values are inextricably linked to your personal satisfaction and motivation for running your business. When your purpose is fed by a passion which you can share with others and stay true to your values then you are well on the way to having a winning formula for business success – or put another way your “ Why – How – What“ Some folks refer to this as being in their DNA.
So here is the connection. You recall the moments which made you punch the air or leap with enthusiasm on something which had been achieved. Ask yourself how much of that was down to the contribution which others had made and did you take time to share your feeling of achievement with them at the time? That act of recognition may well have a similar effect on them as your own feeling of achievement.
