The Moral Maze on the morality of tax

14-11-14

The Moral Maze (Radio 4) a few days ago debated whether tax is a moral issue (sparked by David Cameron’s recent comments on the subject), and was absolutely fascinating. You can still listen to it here.

The discussion was lively and often (but not always!) well-argued.  A couple of quotes stuck in my mind:

Jean-Baptiste Colbert (Napoleon’s tax collector)

“The art of taxation consists in so plucking the goose as to obtain the largest amount of feathers with the least possible amount of hissing.”

Clement Attlee

“Charity is a cold grey loveless thing. If a rich man wants to help the poor, he should pay his taxes gladly, not dole out money at a whim.”
